A best-selling book on the ceremonial uses of sage, to help with physical, mental and spiritual healing. Includes information on gathering sage and the author's personal reflections on healing. A must for stores that sell smudging supplies.

The term ""smudging"" refers to the practice of burning herbs for spiritual cleansing. In this new edition of her classic book, Harvest McCampbell explains and illustrates this integral part of traditional Native American life. She also offers valuable advice on how to reclaim lost traditions and find personal healing rituals. Learn to make smudge sticks; to identify, collect and grow a wide range of sacred plants for smudging. This expanded edition includes research techniques, sources of potent smudging herbs, new information on the use of sacred plants and more.

The hermit thrush, a shy bird with an enchanting song, usually hides deep in the forest and reveals his song only to the lucky few. Tehanetorens, a master storyteller steeped in Mohawk tradition, presents the legendary tale of this bird in a way that is both fresh and ancient. Beautiful line drawings throughout.

A fascinating look into the structure of traditional Cherokee society. Given here are clan names in Cherokee and English, descriptions of power animals of the clans, information on the matrilineal system, marriage, government and more. Included are descriptions of Native American ceremonies and rituals in which these plants play a central role. Alfred Savinelli has wildcrafted plants for more than 25 years, and is an active defender of plant rights and indigenous wisdom. Here, the author recounts the compelling history of women's struggle for freedom and equality in this country, and documents the Iroquois influence on this broad social movement. This book is used in many Women's Studies courses at colleges and universities around the country.  A young bison growing up on the plains in the late 1800s faces peril at the hands of soldiers, who are destroying the great buffalo herds as a way to control native tribes. He is befriended by a native warrior and a white hunter who try to save him and his herd from annihilation. Ages 12 years and up.
Growing concerns about our environment are causing many people to learn more about the natural world around them. North America's original people lived in harmony with nature for ages. Knowledge of the old ways described here can still be of direct use.

A small book with a lot of information. Presented here are facts about Cherokee history, language, food, dwellings, clothing, arts and crafts, government, religion, legends and games. "The Modern Fancy Dancer" and ""The Northern Traditional Dancer"" are valuable additions to the short list of books on powwow dances. Each book begins with a discussion of the origin and history of the respective dances as they evolved into the styles of today. The sections on costume construction are concise and easy to follow, with instructions on the techniques and materials used to create the basic costumes and accessories for each dance. Complemented by black and white photographs of early dancers and beautiful color photographs of modern dancers in their full regalia.
A guide to all of the activities you might see at a powwow. Each dance is given a detailed description, background information and history. The beautiful and dynamic illustrations of powwow dancers by Native American artist Diana Stanley create a wonderful sense of 'being there'.
